1.) Cocoa

The largest producer of cacao is Cote d’Ivoire with an average annual production of 1.2 million tons followed by Ghana with approximately 600,000 tons and Indonesia with about 500,000 tons.

Typically, cocoa are not eaten on its raw form although it’s edible. Cocoa, which is known from a variety of common name such as Cocoa Bean, Cacao Bean or simply Cacao, is the dried and fully fermented fatty seed of Theobroma cacao. Cocoa solids and cocoa butter are extracted from these seeds which are the basis of chocolate and other Mesoamerican foods.

One of my favorite bread is the cinnamon. What is a cinnamon? Well, a cinnamon is a small evergreen tree endemic to Sri Lanka. The spice obtained from the bark of this tree is also called cinnamon.

The most popular producer of this spice is Sri Lanka where it has been cultivated since time immemorial. Sri Lanka produced 90% of the world’s cinnamon followed by China, India and Vietnam. It is also grown in countries like Indonesia and Bangladesh. Brazil, Madagascar, Egypt and Zanzibar also cultivate cinnamon.

The highly fragrant aroma of cinnamon is used as food flavorings.

It is used to enhance the taste and smell of many foods such as bread.

3.) Vanilla

The world’s largest producer of Vanilla is Madagascar producing 58% (2,534 tonnes) of the world’s vanilla. Indonesia is next with 23% (2,399) and China with 9% (1,000 tonnes).

Vanilla is a popular flavoring derived from orchids. The vanilla genus of orchid is endemic to Mexico.

4.) Soybeans

The world’s largest producer of soy beans is the United States producing 87.7 metric tons followed by Brazil with 52.4 metric tons and Argentina with 40.4 metric tons.

Soybeans or Soya Beans are legumes endemic to Asia and is classified as an oilseed. It has been cultivated for over 5,000 years in China.

Uses

It is grown to add nitrogen into the soil as part of crop rotation.

It is a low-cost source of protein for animal feeds

The oil is used in many industrial applications.

It is an important ingredient in many meat and dairy analogues

Non-fermented food uses of soybeans include soymilk, Tofu, Tofu skin or Yuba.

Fermented food uses of soybeans include shoyu or soy sauce, miso, natto and tempeh.

5.) Areca Nut/Betel Nut

In the Philippines, particularly in the Cordillera region, combined Betel leaf and Areca nut is widely popular and consumed. Betel nut is the seed of the Areca palm which grows in many tropical areas. It is commonly but perhaps erroneously referred to as "Betel Nut."

Chewing the mixture of Areca nut and Betel leaf is very popular in Taiwan. It has been a tradition, custom or ritual which dates back thousands of years in many Asian countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Pakistan and other oceanic countries.

Use

It is used as a psychoactive drug.

6.) Pistachio

The world’s leading producer of pistachio is Iran with an annual average production of 190,000 tons. Next largest pistachio producer is the US with 140,000 tons followed by Turkey and Syria with 60,000 tons each.

Pistachio is a small tree endemic to Syria, Iran, Turkey and nearby regions. This tree produces a nut.

Uses

The kernels are often eaten whole, either fresh or roasted and salted

The tasty and delicious Pili Nut (Canarium ovatum) is endemic to the Philippines. It is abundant and wild in the Bicol Region particularly in Sorsogon, and in parts of Visayas and Mindanao. Leading producers of Pili Nut is the Philippines. It is also grown in Malaysia.

Uses

Pili Nut is eaten roasted and salted.

It is sold as Pili Nut brittle.

8.) Jackfruit

This very sour fruit called Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) is endemic to Sudan and tropical areas of Africa.

The largest producer of Tamarind is India producing 275,000 tons annually. India is also the largest consumer of this tropical fruit. Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines and Malaysia are large producers also of this fruit.

Uses

The young fruit is often used as a component of savory dishes

It is used as a pickling agent.

It is used as a means of making certain poisonous Yams in Ghana safe for human consumption.

10.) Rambutan

Rambutan is a popular fruit in the Philippines and in other tropical countries. It is the fruit of a medium-sized tropical tree and is endemic in the Philippines, Indonesia Malaysia, Sri Lanka and other Southeast Asian countries.

The world’s leading producer of this mouth-watering tropical fruit is Thailand. Aside from Asian countries like the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia, Australia and Hawaii are important producer also.
