Bizarre, Unique and Weird Rivers of the World

There are hundreds of rivers in the world. Some are remarkable for their length, others are notable for their historical significant. Some rivers are popular for their panorama and other rivers are simply unique, weird or bizarre.

1.) Rio Negro

Rio Negro is a river located in South America. It is a unique river for its unusual color – black. Rio Negro or Black River is the largest left tributary of the world’s largest river – the Amazon. Rio Negro is also recognized as the world’s largest blackwater river. Although it was named Black River, its waters are not totally black. It can be compared to the color of a strong tea. When viewed from afar, Rio Negro looks black.

Ganges River is regarded as a unique river and one of the most historically significant rivers in the world. It is considered a  Holy River, in fact the holiest, amongst members of the Indian religion – Hinduism. The 2,510 km (1,560 mi) river is worshiped as the goddess Ganga. The river has been declared as the National River of India.

3.) Jordan River

The 251 km long Jordan River is a famous and unique river located in Southwest Asia that flows to the Dead Sea. On Biblical account, Jordan River is the most famous river. It is where Jesus Christ was baptized by St. John the Baptist as stated in the books of John, Luke, Mark and Matthew in the New Testament.

Citarum River is a weird river located in West Java, Indonesia. It is considered as the world’s dirtiest river. Walungan Citarum, its local name, has an important role in the life of the Javanese people. The river is economically and agiculturally important but the river is heavily polluted by human activity. There are approximately 5 million people who live in the basin of the river. A $500 million worth of loan had been granted by a prominent bank for the cleaning of the very polluted Citarum River.

5.) Puerto Princesa Subterranean River

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River in Palawan, Philippines is one of the most unusual and weird rivers in the world. It flows underground before emerging into the South China Sea. It addition, it’s unique because it is the world’s longest navigable underground river. Eight reptile species are native to the area. Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is one of the 28 finalists for the “New Seven Wonders of Nature” competition.

Arizona’s Horseshoe Bend, a magnificent meander of the Colorado River located near Page, Arizona in the Unite States is notable for its panorama. Horseshoe Bend is called ‘King Bend’ by locals. It can be viewed from the steep cliff above and according to Google terrain maps, the overlook is 4,200 feet above sea level and the Colorado River is at 3,200 feet above sea level making it a breathtaking 1,000 foot drop.

7.) Yarlung Zangbo River

Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet is the highest river in the world and considered also as one of the deadliest. This beautiful river with crystal clear water is 2,057 km long. It is also known as Brahmaputra River. Yarlung Zangbo means the Mother River of Tibet.

The 1320 meter long D River in Lincoln City, Oregon, USA is the world’s shortest river up to 1989 when the 61 meter long Roe River was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the shortest.

The 61 meter long Roe River is a weird river. It is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s shortest river. It is a river that runs between Giant Springs and the Missouri River in Great Falls, Montana, USA. Since 2006, the Guinness Book of Records does not list a shortest river category anymore.

10.) Huang Ho River

Huang Ho River, more popularly known as Yellow River, in China is considered the deadliest river in the world killing thousands of people annually by its flooding. From the 20th century to present, it is estimated that the floods caused by Huang Ho River already killed 5 million people, more or less. Because of this, Yellow River is also known as ‘China’s Sorrow’. Considered as China’s Cradle of Civilization, it is also known as Huang He River.

Another deadly river is the Yangtze River in China. It can be considered the second deadliest river in the world. The numerous floods caused by Yangtze River from 1900s to present killed hundred thousands of people.

The Amazon River, the river with the largest drainage basin in the world, is a unique river because it is home to the some of the deadliest and most ferocious animals on the planet like the piranha. It is also home to the Boto or Amazon River Dolphin, Amazonian Manatee, Tucuxi and many more.

Lena River, one of the rivers with the largest watershed in the world, has the unusual distinction of appearing to be the longest river in the world when viewed on a map using a Mercator projection.

14.) Nile River

Nile River is not just the longest river it is also one of the most unusual rivers in the world. Most major rivers flow southward, westward or eastward but Nile is different. It’s unusual because it is one of the few major rivers that flow from south to north. The Nile Crocodile, one of the deadliest animals in the world, is home to the Nile River. Each year, hundreds of deadly attacks are attributed to the Nile Crocodile within sub-Saharan Africa.
