The average depth of the lake is 256 meters with a maximum depth of 363 meters making it the second deepest lake in the country. There are 3 volcanoes that surround this second largest caldera lake in Japan. As one of the most popular crater lake tourist destinations in the archipelago, Chippu fishing is now a favorite pastime in summer. There are facilities for tourists in the area such as visitor center, several campgrounds and Onsen.
