The Indian State of West Bengal and Its People

West Bengal is one of the most populous States India which has provided the World with a whole lot of talent in almost every field.

West Bengal is a State of the Indian Union, located in the East of the country. The total area of this state is 808752 square kilometers and it has a population of more than 80 million people. Historically, Bengal, which comprises the regions known as West Bengal and Bangladesh, has provided the world a lot in terms of Culture and traditions. Bengalis such as Rabindra Nath Tagore are famous for their poems and literature. Even the National Anthem of the Indian Union was created by him. West Bengal has also been a center of Scientific Development, and with the coming of the British, many Scientific Institutes were set up in the State of Bengal.

The Capital of the State is Calcutta which is also locally and officially known as Kolkata. The region of Bengal has a very long cultural History, dating back more than 4000 years. It has been part of many different empires and kingdoms. The region became semi-independent after the Mughal Empire weakened. After the Battle of Plassey, the Province of Bengal came under total British control. The region played a very important part in the Establishment of Colonial rule throughout South Asia. Calcutta became the Capital of British India for some time in the Beginning of the Colonial Era, later to be replaced by Delhi.

The Primary Ethno-Linguistic group in West Bengal are the Bengalis who speak Bangla. There are also non-Bengali speaking residents such as Biharis from Bihar, Gorkhas from Nepal and some local tribal groups. The Literacy of West Bengal is nearly 70 per cent. More than 70 per cent of the region's population is Hindu and around 25 per cent is Muslim. There are also large Chrisitian minorities in the State. English is also a popular language among the Upper Classes of Bengali Society. Calcutta is often regarded as a major educational center in India.

West Bengal had also been a center stage for clashes between the Colonial Government and the Revolutionaries. Famous revolutionaries of Bengal include Subhash Chandra Bose, who fought with supplies from the Japanese against the British but was later defeated. Currently the State is ruled by the CPI(M) who have a long history in the State. Other major political parties include the Trinamool Congress, Indian National Congress etc.

The People of Kolkata are known for their Perfection in many different arts. Artists and Musicians have emerged from West Bengal to make famous the region comprising of West Bengal. There are also a lot of Industries in West Bengal, and it was historically one of the first regions where the British set up modern Industries. West Bengal is also linked to the Sea, through which a lot of trade goes on.
