One of the very few caldera lakes in the United States is the crater lake of Mount Katmai, a large strato volcano located in state of Alaska. It is part of the Kamai National park and Preserve and has a diameter of about 10 km. The lake was formed during the eruption of 1912. The maximum elevation of the caldera rim reaches 2,047 m.

Another caldera lake in the United States is the crater lake of the Medicine Lake Volcano, a large shield volcano located in the state of California. Mount Shasta is just 50 km away from this crater lake. Medicine Lake Volcano has been active for 500,000 years and the lavas from the volcano are estimated to be about 600 km3 in volume.

Yellowstone Lake is a caldera lake located within the Yellowstone National park in the state of Wyoming. It is the largest body of water in the park with an area of 350 km2.
